Registration time…what to do??

Hello,

We are currently in the middle of the Early Bird Registrations at the studio. This is the time of year where I field questions about the options for next year’s lessons. The most important thing to remember is that the best decision for your family is the one that best supports your child. Moving ahead into the next level may not be the best choice. There are many things to consider. For instance, how did your son/daughter enjoy classes this year? How was the practicing at home? What was the overall ‘feel’ about music this year? If you found yourself in conflict with your child over practicing or coming to class, find out why! Moving blindly ahead into the next level will not solve the problem.

We like to feel good about what we are doing, right? We like to feel that we understand what it is we are expected to do and more importantly, we need to know that we are able to do what is being asked of us. Once we understand, it takes time and practice to master the skills required. For some, this process takes a little longer than others in the class. In my opinion, the child who moves into the next level without a good grasp of the skills in the current level, is setting themselves up for failure. Music needs to be FUN! If it’s not fun, you will be fighting an uphill battle all year with your child, and who wants that?!?

Much can be learned by repeating a level again. Foremost, the confidence of knowing they’ve done it before is huge! Knowing what is expected is the first step, and they’ve got it! They can feel confident about that. That confidence will spill over into other areas as well. Most likely, if you are considering repeating a level, your child struggled through this current year. Is struggling fun? NO! Remember what I said about music needing to be fun? Repeating a level will give your child that fun factor. They worked hard this year….now let them enjoy. Once the pressure isn’t as strong, they will relax and start to really enjoy the music they are making. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

So take some time to consider what is the best solution for your family? You know what your child is capable of and what you are prepared to do in the way of supporting them next year. And most importantly, know this….you did not fail if you decide to repeat a level. You’ve made the best decision for your family!
